Google may take its battle for global domination to the high seas with the launch of its own “computer navy”.

The company is considering deploying the supercomputers necessary to operate its internet search engines on barges anchored up to seven miles (11km) offshore.

The “water-based data centres” would use wave energy to power and cool their computers, reducing Google’s costs. Their offshore status would also mean the company would no longer have to pay property taxes on its data centres, which are sited across the world, including in Britain.

In the patent application seen by The Times, Google writes: “Computing centres are located on a ship or ships, anchored in a water body from which energy from natural motion of the water may be captured, and turned into electricity and/or pumping power for cooling pumps to carry heat away.”

The increasing number of data centres necessary to cope with the massive information flows generated on popular websites has prompted companies to look at radical ideas to reduce their running costs.

The supercomputers housed in the data centres, which can be the size of football pitches, use massive amounts of electricity to ensure they do not overheat. As a result the internet is not very green.

Data centres consumed 1 per cent of the world’s electricity in 2005. By 2020 the carbon footprint of the computers that run the internet will be larger than that of air travel, a recent study by McKinsey, a consultancy firm, and the Uptime Institute, a think tank, predicted.

In an attempt to address the problem, Microsoft has investigated building a data centre in the cold climes of Siberia, while in Japan the technology firm Sun Microsystems plans to send its computers down an abandoned coal mine, using water from the ground as a coolant. Sun said it could save $9 million (£5 million) of electricity costs a year and use half the power the data centre would have required if it was at ground level.

Technology experts said Google’s “computer navy” was an unexpected but clever solution. Rich Miller, the author of the datacentreknowledge.com blog, said: “It’s really innovative, outside-the-box thinking.”

Google refused to say how soon its barges could set sail. The company said: “We file patent applications on a variety of ideas. Some of those ideas later mature into real products, services or infrastructure, some don’t.”

Concerns have been raised about whether the barges could withstand an event such as a hurricane. Mr Miller said: “The huge question raised by this proposal is how to keep the barges safe.”

I love political season, especially presidential election season, and especially less than two months to the election. Words start to fire, issues fall to the wayside, the media looks dumber and dumber and bloggers are having a field day. Palin wears lip stick, but not the kind Obama proclaimed the pig wore, McCain is slowly withering away as Palin takes the spot light, Obama has fallen on deaf ears and is Biden still Obama’s running mate? It’s a time of who can out bullshit the other. This break between the conventions and the first of the debates is essential for the media to create a whirlwind of stories surrounding four politicians of he said she said. Anyway, enough is enough in my boat, but the t-shirts and stickers that generate out of this craziness are worth a look:

Startup Fights Greenwashing With Data Sent to Your Phone

By Alexis Madrigal from wired.com

Ever since companies across America, from Exxon to Wal-Mart, started “going green,” scientists, environmentalists and skeptics have all been wondering: What the does green mean, anyway?

Today, a startup came out of stealth mode claiming that they’ll put hard numbers to companies’ health and environmental claims about their wares.

Spun out of Berkeley’s Sustainability Information Lab and funded by prominent venture capital firms,GoodGuide plans to provide free, scientist-vetted data about the things you buy.

“I think there’s a burgeoning awareness that there is a global supply chain behind a product,” Dara O’Rourke, GoodGuide’s founder and a Berkeley professor, told Wired.com. “People are seeing that there are real costs to these everyday low prices. The question is, can we deliver this information in a way that is simple and easy and helps people make decisions?”

GoodGuide wants to step into the information vacuum that has developed along with the green movement. Many consumers want to purchase products in line with their values — whatever they are — but find it difficult to know if one soap or shampoo is actually better than another for their health or the planet’s. The situation has been complicated by marketers who’ve seized on the slogan “going green” to promote products with questionable or unknown impacts.

O’Rourke’s company isn’t the only one working on the lack of information in the green space. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales launched a new green-focused site called Wikia Green earlier this week that aims to use the community-driven approach to vetting green info. Wales said that even if you had the money to pay ethical premiums for products, it was hard to know where to put it to do the most good.

“Suppose you’ve decided you’ll spend an extra $500 uneconomically, but you still want to optimize,” Wales said. “What are the basic impacts of various things that I can do?”

That turns out to be a harder question to answer than you might think. Wales is hoping that a fervent community develops around Wikia Green to come to reasonable conclusions about what products are “green” but lack of good data could slow the growth of the site.

GoodGuide’s database, the product of a decade of supply chain research, draws on more than 650 data sources, some public and some private, to create basic metrics for what’s safe to use and “green.” It turns out that for many products, there aren’t huge benefits of one product over another, but it takes getting the nitty-gritty details to figure that out.

“Most shampoos are pretty similar, so there isn’t a lot of difference for most products, but there are some where your purchase can make a huge difference,” O’Rourke said. “There’s no question that there’s still huge gaps in the data, but we’re taking a big step forward on what is the most comprehensive and reliable set of data ever made available to the public for free.”

Many consumer decisions are still made at retail, so O’Rourke wants to provide multiple mobile ways to access the company’s data. Beginning tomorrow, you’ll be able to receive text messages about products based on their UPC code and an iPhone app will follow within weeks. And that’s not counting the applications that outside users could come up with: GoodGuide will have an open API that exposes the site’s data for other applications. That could help provide firm grounding for sites like Wales’ Wikia Green.

GoodGuide contains hundreds of datapoints about products broken into three categories of impacts: health, social and environmental.

The beta version of the product, which was unveiled a few minutes ago at the Tech Crunch 50 conference, contains two product types — personal care and household chemicals — with food, electronics, toys, and apparel to be added over the next several months.

Even the earliest beta contains some surprises. Among mens’ deodorants, a $6 can of Axe body spray gets a startling 8.7 out of 10 environmental score, while hippie-standby Tom’s only gets a 9.2. The worst product in the database, a $47 Perry Ellis deodorant, receives a 4.6. Users can drill down into the specifics of the ratings on the site.

Michael Kanellos, an analyst at Greentech Media, said he saw big potential for the website, both among businesses trying to reduce their environmental footprints and just plain curious consumers.

“I think there’s a huge appeal to it,” said Kanellos. “There’s a huge portion, maybe 40 percent of the population, that always wants to know what’s inside the products they’re using.”

But changing consumer behavior goes beyond merely providing data. Some researchers, like Cornell Food and Brand lab founder, Brian Wansink, have found that labeling products is at best useless and at worst counterproductive.

“I used to think that awareness was the solution. I’m now convinced that it has nothing do with behavior change,” Wansink told Wired.com in an interview last year. If awareness were the answer, we’d all be rich, skinny and athletic.”

O’Rourke agreed with Wansink and said that he’d put in years at the Sustainability Information Lab at Berkeley trying to figure out when and how to provide backstory information to change purchasing decisions. Now, he’ll get to test out his theories in the beta.

“This is a real beta. We’re not pretending it’s beta,” O’Rourke said. “We need people to help us tune it, so we can figure out the connection between science and want people want.”

There is no guarantee that consumers will flock to GoodGuide, no matter how many avenues the company provides. Greentech analyst Kanellos said that a lot of consumers might be tired of thinking about their everyday purchases.

“Life’s too short to worry about your toothpaste all day,” he said.

But one advantage that the site has over user-generated content sites is that will be valuable from day one. Already, the site boasts metrics for over 61,000 products.

This is pretty cool, even though I don’t quite understand it entirely… Check out this article from Wired.com

Interactive Music Format Pregnant With Possibility

New digital music formats tend to increase sound quality, reduce file size, add surround sound channels or restrict via DRM. Musinaut’s new MXP4 format breaks the mold by re-imagining the standard, linear style of recording music in an interactive way that allows creators to pack extra beats, harmonies, genres or even artists into a single track. Users, rather than listening to a track exactly as it was laid down, can choose between various versions in a software player or online widget. In just one example, an artist could offer pop, rock, reggae and drum and bass versions of the same song.

The idea for Musinaut germinated when Gilles Babinet, founder of the music and ringtone distributor Musiwave, was asked by a journalist in the spring of 2006, “What’s the next big thing in music?”

Musinaut CEO Trish Thomson explained, “It’s one question he hadn’t anticipated. So he just blurted out, ‘It’ll be interactive!’ And then spent the plane ride home trying to figure out what interactive music would really look like.”

In the spirit of showing rather than telling, here’s what Babinet’s interactive music idea ended up looking like.

But the most impressive part of Musinaut’s demonstration in our offices showed several bands covering the same song within a single MXP4 file, with the listener able to select which one plays. Here’s some audio I recorded from the meeting that demonstrates the concept by transitioning between several different bands covering the Beatles’ “Come Together” as a potential cross-promotional opportunity for indie bands:

The resurgence is here, today I watched Bob Woodward dismantle the Bush administration. Say what you like, but the guy brought down Nixon, so he must be telling the truth or at least part of the truth…Anyway, I was thinking the focus has been so much about the Presidential election, which is important, but we’ve got thousands of troops in the middle east being fingered and fucked and it’s time we bring our focus back to where it should be with the men and women overseas, doing dirty work and having to do it over and over again. For what? Well I guess we’ll have to wait and find out–somebody’s master plan… Anyway fecalface.com had some artists submit some great pieces of art with a focus of Iraq, here are few but go to Fecal Face for more.

Okay, I know everybody who gives a shit about it has probably already discovered pandora.com, but I think it is worth another mention. This site is way cool, you definately have to go with the flow as your control over the songs played is not exact, but I’ve heard a lot of music that I wouldn’t have even blinked at before. Basically the break down is, pandora.com is a site where you can enter your favorite artist or any artist for that matter and the player will select similar styles of music to accompany that artist, fucking cool if you ask me. And best of all it’s free. Check it out and listen to music, it will calm your angst…
